What are the Different Types of Baccarat?

Different types of baccarat: an introduction

There are a number of baccarat types, each with slightly different drawing rules and player interactions. Understanding the difference is crucial because not all casinos play the best-known version of the game – Punto Banco. By ensuring you have a solid grounding in the different types of baccarat, you won’t be caught out by any rules you’re not aware of. You’ll also be free to play at any casino, no matter which version of the game they play.

To start off with, here’s a rundown of the most common types of baccarat:

EZ Baccarat

The game of EZ baccarat has been around for over ten years and is a favourite with Las Vegas casinos. EZ baccarat introduces a few extra rules that you don’t find in traditional baccarat. For regular baccarat players, these additional rules are a useful way to keep the game exciting.

The rules of EZ Baccarat

You play the game in the same way as standard baccarat but with the following differences:

  1. Betting on the banker doesn’t incur a commission fee
  2. If the banker gets three cards adding up to seven, that’s a push and no one wins
  3. There are two more options for placing bets: the Dragon 7 and the Panda 8

What is Dragon 7 bet?

The Dragon 7 is a side bet you can make on top of your decision to go with the banker, the player or a tie. As you know from above, if the banker gets three cards adding to seven that’s a push. However, the Dragon 7 overrides this to make you a winner if you’ve put money on this bet.

What is a Panda 8 bet?

The Panda 8 is another side bet that pays out for a winning player hand totalling eight. As with the Dragon 7, the bet wins when the total is hit on the third card. But whereas the Dragon 7 bet pays 40 to 1, the Panda 8 only pays 25 to 1.

Super Six Baccarat

Baccarat Super Six includes an additional side bet known as the Super Six. It is a wager placed on the banker’s hand winning with a score of six and pays 12 to 1. More common in the UK, this version of baccarat lets you bet on the ‘Super Six’ in each hand you play.

Some casinos play a variation of this rule called Super Six Plus. The only difference is that they pay out 12 to 1 on the banker’s hand winning with a total of six on two cards, but 20 to 1 if the banker scores six on the third card.

Chemin de Fer

Chemin de Fer is a type of baccarat that’s less common in online casinos. In Chemin de Fer, each player takes a turn at being the banker. So, you’re not betting on the player or the banker; you are one or the other. If you wish, you can decline the role of banker.

Another difference between Chemin de Fer and other kinds of baccarat is that the drawing rules are less strict. For example, the player doesn’t have to hit on five. This rule introduces more strategy to the baccarat game, as the player can pressure the banker to play more aggressively if they choose to hit on fives.

Three Card Baccarat

Three card baccarat puts more emphasis than traditional baccarat on drawing face cards. The best possible hand is three face cards and if there’s a tie, the hand with more face cards wins. Aside from this, winning hands work in the same way as traditional baccarat.

This type of baccarat also introduces another bet: Three Faces. This bet pays if the banker hits three face cards. As the chances of this are slim, most online casinos will pay well on the three faces bet (up to 96 to 1).

Hands score in the same way as traditional baccarat. So, the best baccarat strategies will also work for this game.

Super Pan 9

Strictly speaking, Super Pan 9 isn’t a type of baccarat. However, the rules are similar so if you enjoy baccarat consider giving this game a go. As is the case for Chemin de Fer, this game sets the player against the banker, which means you don’t get to bet on one hand or the other.

In Super Pan 9, there are no 7s, 8s, 9s or 10s in the pack. For this reason, a casino will use a multiple deck shoe containing 16 decks. Your aim is still to finish the game on a strong total – 9. As usual, double-digit totals will have the left digit removed to leave you on a single figure.

The game begins with each player, including the banker, receiving three cards face down. Everyone can then view the cards they have and choose whether to draw a fourth card. The banker has to draw if his cards total three or four.
